but mess things up. yes, if you can believe the g.o.p. presidential obama is responsible for pretty much everything that's wrong in washington, d.c. today including the traffic. from refusing to reach out across the aisle to the sequester that threatens to disembowel the federal government with $1.2 trillion in spending cuts starting a week from this friday, it is all obama's fault. though if you can believe the president, imagine this now, let me stretch your credulity here, the president wasn't entirely to blame. >> obama: the whole design of these arbitrary cuts was to make them so unattractive and so unappealing that democrats and republicans would actually get together and find a good compromise. unfortunately, congress didn't compromise. >> john: mr. obama at least seemed logical to compromise with republicans. >> obama: i am willing to cut more spending that we don't need. get rid of programs that aren't working. i've laid out specific reforms to our entitlement programs. >> john: now if you're like me you just heard the president offer to cut spending and reform entitlement progr

. obama just divisively won an election, determined on the minds of the americans. polls see republicans as the uncompromising party in washington so the public is likely to blame them. the republicans have more to lose politically than the re-elected obama does. a government shutdown fight might be necessary for republican lawmakers to get the need for confrontation with obama out of their systems. like what a five year old having a tantrum. okay. for member management purposes. don't think he's scared by simpson's words. cenk: that's where you and i disagree. i think obama's obsessed with his legacy. i believe he thinks his legacy depends on making sure that he defies his voters, his base, and that he cuts entitlements so he can look like a hero to washington. >> well, he probably also thinks that his base was redefined last november that his base is not you all the time. i don't disagree with you. i think every second term president is consumed by their legacy. i think he sees a way out of this politically and sees victory without having to do the things that he might otherwise have had to do because of what'sen oh the other side. listening to what patrick's saying that's really compelling stuff. i don't think for progressives you also want to look past the defense. when the progressives see defense cuts, they love defense cuts. that's what the sequestration's been all about. few the president's going even further to appeal to the republicans to say these first responders sitting behind me right now are all going to be out of a job. it's a one-way conv

play political chicken. on the front page of the "washington post," as cuts near the focus is on blame, jockeying for the high ground. so the republicans are trying to say -- they are blaming this whole thing on president obama, said it was his idea. so i want you to understand for the record how this hand. remember this was all about the debt ceiling. how do we avoid going over the fiscal cliff with the debt ceiling last summer. and they were log jammed. and they said we need something to really make this happen. and at a meeting at the white house somebody said years ago they had a thing called the sequester, where these horrible horrible, horrible cuts were put in there that would happen if congress didn't act. and everybody said okay. let's do that again. then it came up to the congress and the republicans in congress 174 of them voted for this. john boehner paul ryan eric cantor all voted for it. and when it was over john boehner said i love this. i got 98% of what i want. these cuts which are so bad that everybody thought never, never, never would congr
